Perfectly seared scallops sound fancy, but they’re surprisingly simple to make at home. With just a few ingredients and a hot pan, you can have restaurant-quality scallops on the table in minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb fresh sea scallops
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1–2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 clove garlic, minced (optional)
  • Fresh lemon wedges

Instructions

  1. Pat the scallops dry
    This is the most important step. Use paper towels to remove moisture so you get that perfect golden sear.
  2. Season simply
    Lightly season both sides of the scallops with salt and pepper.
  3. Heat the pan
    Add olive oil to a skillet over medium-high heat. Let the pan get hot before adding the scallops.
  4. Sear the scallops
    Place scallops in the pan, leaving space between them. Cook for about 2–3 minutes without moving them until a golden crust forms.
  5. Flip and finish
    Flip the scallops, add butter and garlic (optional), and cook another 1–2 minutes. Spoon the melted butter over the scallops as they finish cooking.
  6. Serve immediately
    Squeeze fresh lemon over the top and enjoy.
